€urovision Athlone – All you need to know

We are getting so excited here in the Athlone Community Radio offices, only 3 more sleeps to go to our big event when €urovision fever comes to the Prince of Wales Hotel at 8pm. Tickets are only €5 each and are available from our offices or by text on 087 936 4974. Thanks to all our participants who have agreed to take part, come along and support them as they need your votes on the night.

    Caroline Coyle is a poet, writer, artist and researcher with an interest in community engagement through the arts.

    She is a member of the Community Awareness and Engagement Commitee at Athlone Community Radio and also sings with ‘The Higgs Bosons’.
    Caroline states that ‘Athlone Community Radio is such a wonderful asset to our community herein Athlone town. It reaches out to to various groups, local, national and international, records high quality programmes about local people and archives our heritage for posterity, The station, it’s employees and volunteers showcases the fantastic original talent in this town, launching music cds and giving people in our community an opportunity to record their talent, such as singers and songwriters, playwrights, poets’.  Caroline will sing “It’s for You” the song that was performed by Niamh Kavanagh in Norway during Eurovision 2010

    Performing as Butch Moore from back in 1965 and singing “Walking the streets in the Rain” we have our very own Volunteer Seamus McKenna.

    Seamus presents Accelerate every Monday between 5 & 6pm on Athlone Community Radio but for one night only you can catch him as a €urovision star in the Prince of Wales this Friday March 24th.

    Gerry Flynn, a native of Athlone, will be singing “Rock n Roll Kids”.

    Gerry has been a volunteer with Athlone Community Radio for several years and has been a regular contributor to the Thursday Mix. Rumour has it Gerry is hoping to have a special guest join him on the night. Pop down to the Prince this Friday night and give him your support.
    “I’m 29 and I have lived in Athlone all my life. I am currently in 1st year studying social care practice for my degree. I am a qualified carer for the last 2 years.

    I have always enjoyed singing and dancing and I competed in a dance competition in London when i was 16 with dancezone. I have always had a passion for the art of music and I’m excited to be taking part in the €urovision as it’s a great opportunity and fantastic to help one of our local community projects. Come along and support me at the Prince of Wales Hotel this Friday Mar 24th at 8pm.”
    Sinead will be performing “Only Teardrops” by Emmelie De Forest who represented Denmark in 2013.


    “My name is Annemarie Meares as ye know the eurovision takes place on the 24th of March in the Prince of Wales Athlone. It’s to raise funds for Athlone Community Radio 88.4fm. Lately they became a part of my special needs daughters time out and she loves to go to the radio station and be able to express herself in a different way and chat and sing with the great team at the radio station. She came home so excited about going each week, they are doing great work there and deserve support to keep them up and running so I feel that taking part in the €urovision is a joy to me.

    I was asked to take part in the show and gladly accepted. So on a final note all the support that ye can give will be greatly appreciated. So come along on the night and support them and hear me sing, and don’t forget to vote for me.”
    Annemarie will be performing “Hold me now” sang by Mr Eurovision Johnny Logan back in 1987 where he won the Eurovision for the second time.

    “I’m a professional musician and singer for the last 30 years. Been to Canada and Europe with my music, have travelled far and wide but in the end there’s no place like Athlone as this is where I started. I’m also musical director and leader of the Coosan Folk Group for many years with great members in it, they are are my second family .

    No matter what happens in this town we are blessed to have Athlone Community Radio station to help and promote local talent and issues that affect the local people. I’m delighted to perform on Friday night to do my bit for the station and to have a bit of crack. I would just like to thank Ursula and all at Athlone Community Radio for all they have done for musicians and for promoting the talent that Athlone has to offer and for keeping us up to date on matters in and around Athlone, here’s wishing all at the station many more years broadcasting and keeping local issues and it’s people up to-date. Come along and vote for me on Friday in the Prince of Wales Hotel.”


    Our youngest contestant is Milutin Cvetkovic who is raising the flag for the Netherlands performing a song by Douwe Bob that was a Eurovision Entry in 2016.
    Come along and support Milutin on Friday night in the Prince of Wales at 8pm, Milutin will be joined on stage by two special backing singers, rumour is they are awesome.



    Introducing the Vontrapps and they are Katie and Clara O’Reilly from Kiltoom, Paul Allen from Mount Temple and Mark Daly from Ballanahown.


    These four young people will take to the stage this Friday night as the “Vontrapps” singing the winning song from 43 years ago, long before they were born, “Waterloo” by ABBA. Come along and support them in the Prince of Wales at 8pm, this is a night not to be missed.




    Hi I’m Rachael,28 years of age from Athlone. I work as a support worker in the ATC in St Hilda’s. Happy to be supporting a local fundraiser. Hoping it will be a great success and a fun night. Love to sing,mind you I haven’t sang in a while,so could be rusty!!!

    Rachael will sing the song that won the Eurovision for the UK back in 1976. “Save all your Kisses for me” by the Brotherhood of Man
