The Railway Children

The Railway Children is a 5-part radio series which tells the history of the railway in Athlone, as well as the stories of the railway workers and their families. 

The Railway Children is presented by Ursula Ledwith, and produced & edited by Amanda Gunning, with sound by Kyle McCallan.

The Railway Children originally aired on Sundays at 3PM between 20th November & 18th December 2016 on Athlone Community Radio 88.4fm, www.athlonecommunityradio.ie, and the TuneIn Radio app.

Episodes

  • In episode 1, presenter Ursula hears about the early days of the railway, how steam trains work, and she visits Cliff, Tommy, and Dick from the Irish Steam Preservation Society.
  • In episode 2, we hear from the railway workers about their memories of the Midland Great Western Railway Station in Athlone.
  • In episode 3, presenter Ursula speaks to railway workers and their families about hard work, good times, and fond memories of the railway.
  • In episode 4, presenter Ursula hears about the end of steam, the dawn of diesel, the decommissioning of Galvin’s Bank, and the closing of the Midland Great Western Railway Station in Athlone.
  • In episode 5, we hear about the rejuvenation of the railway, the 150th Anniversary of the Railway in Athlone, and we host a railway reunion tea party for all of the contributors previously heard on the series.
