Work at the Station

A typical day at the station involves Larry preparing for his show by using the control system and writing the names of all the songs and ad breaks he plays, as well as the news and community diary, on running order sheets. His attention to detail ensures every broadcast runs smoothly.

About You – Q&A

What does a typical day at the station look like for you?

A typical day at the station involves me preparing for my show by using the control system and writing the names of all the songs and ad breaks I play, as well as the news and community diary, on running order sheets.

What do you bring to the station that’s uniquely you?
I have a good, clear, pristine voice, which is essential for any radio presenter whenever they are presenting a show. In addition, my encyclopaedic knowledge of music, entertainment, sports, etc. makes me a natural fit for the radio.

Radio & Music Vibes

Who’s your ultimate radio hero or inspiration?
Ronan Collins from RTÉ is my ultimate radio hero. I used to listen to his RTÉ Radio 1 programme The Ronan Collins Show on a regular basis years ago, and his style of presenting, as well as his knowledge of music, inspired me to become a radio presenter myself.

Music, talk, news — what’s your favourite type of radio content and why?
Music, undoubtedly, is my favourite type of radio content. I’ve been listening to music ever since I was very young and, whenever I play any particular song on my show, it feels like I’m sharing a piece of nostalgia with our listeners.

Random & Revealing

Tea or coffee?
I like both tea and coffee, and I’d almost always have a cup of either before starting my radio show, coffee especially, as it helps me to stay alert whenever I’m on the air.

If you could instantly master one instrument, what would it be?
The guitar, no doubt. I’ve been playing the guitar for many years and if I feel like covering any particular song, I’d find a way to make it work on the instrument.

The Wacky Corner

Pineapple on pizza: yes or no?
No. I’d much prefer pepperoni than pineapple on pizza.

If Athlone Community Radio was turned into a sitcom, what role would you play?
I’d play the role of the station’s weekday music show presenter, bringing my unique blend of diverse musical knowledge and engaging storytelling to the airwaves.

Community & Impact

How do you see radio making a difference in Athlone?
Since becoming a volunteer at Athlone Community Radio, I have seen the station go from strength to strength, providing local news and information to the community, as well as promoting local culture and celebrating community achievements, amongst other things.

What’s your proudest moment as part of Athlone Community Radio?
My proudest moment would have to be taking part in the May Music Marathon on 27th May 2022, where I presented music from the 1990s between 12 noon and 1pm. To have participated in a fundraising event for the station, which plays a crucial role in providing a voice for the community, is something I’ve always felt proud of.

Larry’s voice, passion, and knowledge continue to make Athlone Community Radio a place where music and community come together.
