Meet the Team: Noel Lackey

Noel is Athlone Community Radio’s Volunteer.

Noel Lackey’s radio journey began back in the 1970s on pirate stations, long before community radio was officially established. Today, his decades of experience, love of music, and dedication to broadcasting make him a valued voice at Athlone Community Radio.

About Me

How did you first get involved in community radio?
I have been involved in radio from the mid 1970’s, working on various pirate stations through the 70’s/80’s. When Athlone Community Radio was formed I presented several shows and for a period of time I was on the board of directors.

What advice would you give to someone thinking about volunteering in radio?
The initial advice would be to just do it, do not over analyse it, just do it and see how it goes. Then after the first show, analyse it and put a plan in place to make the next show better. Practice anything that you are going to read several times to make sure that you have the pacing and pronunciation correct. Do this post-mortem after every show and make sure the next show is better than the last.

Radio & Music Vibes

If you could interview anyone, living or dead, who would it be and why?
It would have to be Rory Gallagher. I would like to find out what drives him and also find out about his thought process when writing a song

What’s your dream radio segment or show idea?
I always would be interested in doing a show about famous songs, finding out the story behind them and what the appeal is that has made them timeless.

Random & Revealing

Tea or coffee?
Coffee for me, it keeps me focused and driven when working on a project.

One skill no one at the station knows about:
I am level 5 in piano.

The Wacky Corner

You’ve been cursed to speak only in riddles for 24 hours — how do you order coffee?
A cup I fill, but have no hands. I wake the mind, but have no voice. I am poured from a pot, a dark and steaming choice. What am I?

Pineapple on pizza?
Definitely not for me, I don’t want pineapple on anything.

Community & Impact

What does community mean to you?
It gives me a sense of belonging with people who have shared beliefs, offer support, a listening ear, and I receive a sense of security, shared purpose, and friendship.

What would you say to a listener who’s never tuned in before?
To anyone listening for the very first time, I’m glad you found us. I’m ready to take your requests and shoutouts. Text us at 087 99 55 884, or find us on social media at [Social Media Handle]. Let me know what you want to hear, and I’ll do my best to get it on the air.

Noel’s mix of old-school radio roots and creative show ideas bring both experience and energy to Athlone Community Radio.
