Are you passionate about Irish culture, history, folklore and language? Do you enjoy sharing fascinating stories that spark curiosity and keep traditions alive?
We are looking for a creative volunteer to research, produce, and present our new “Did You Know? – Irish Edition” segment.
This engaging 2–10 minutes-long slot will bring bite-sized historical, cultural, or folklore facts about local areas or Ireland as a whole, delivered in the Irish language.
From ancient legends and quirky customs to hidden gems of local history, you’ll help our listeners rediscover the richness of Ireland’s heritage in an enjoyable and accessible way.
This role is also ideal for Irish language learners or fluent speakers who would like to practice and share their skills in a fun, creative, and supportive environment.

You will be supported every step of the way by the ACR Volunteer Coordinator, Head of Programming, the Athlone Today producer and all our staff members. Our tech team will also assist you in creating recordings of professional broadcasting quality.
Additionally, you will receive training manuals, on-the-job training, and/or QQI 3/QQI 4 courses if you are interested and/or it is needed.
Key Responsibilities
. Research interesting and relevant historical, cultural, or folklore facts about Ireland or local areas
. Write and script short, engaging segments in the Irish language
. Record, present, and produce the Did You Know? segment with support from the ACR team
. Collaborate with the Programming Department, Athlone Today team and IT team to create and schedule broadcasts
. Ensure accuracy and clarity in presenting information to the audience
. Promote cultural awareness and encourage appreciation of Irish heritage through storytelling
Desired Skills
While full training on the technical aspects of broadcasting will be provided, the following qualities would be beneficial:
. A good standard of spoken Irish and an interest in using the language in media
. Curiosity about Irish history, culture, or folklore, with a willingness to research and learn
. Enthusiasm for sharing stories and making information engaging for listeners
. Strong communication and scripting skills, or a desire to develop them
. Ability to work independently on research while also collaborating with the ACR team
. Good time management and organisational skills to meet deadlines
