Athlone Community Radio‘s Community Diary will highlight local events and Community resources taking place throughout Athlone.


. The Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association will host a ‘Drink Tea for MND’ on Thursday 25th April from 11am3pm, at the ACT building, Ball Alley Lane Athlone. Contact Leah at 087-1222793. Your support is appreciated.

. The Old Athlone Society will present the Billy English Memorial Lecture in the Athlone Springs Hotel on Wednesday 24th April at 8.15pm. The topic is ‘Memories of the lesser gentry in the Midlands, 1891 – 1923’. The speaker is Michael Byrne of Offaly History.

. Artist Mimi Seery and historian Gearoid O’Brien warmly invite the local community to take part in an Art and Heritage workshop at Abbey Road Studios, Athlone, on Friday May 3rd. In the workshop participants will be guided through the history of the former workhouse buildings. There will be stories, group discussion and art making. The workshop is free to attend but booking is essential: registration at www.eventbrite.ie.

. Rosemount GAA Club is promising a weekend not to be missed when they celebrate their upcoming 100th anniversary. The festivities take place on Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th May in the surrounds of Fr O’Growney Park. There will be children’s entertainment, food, music and dance taking place over the two days. . A new monthly market takes place on the first Saturday of each month at Rob’s Ranch House in Irishtown, Athlone from 12.30pm to 5pm. Crafts, local art, food and other produce will be on sale on the day. All welcome. Phone 090-6450596.

. The Athlone Agri-Show recently held its Annual General Meeting in the Bounty Athlone and announced details for their 2024 Show. It will be held on the farm of Michael O’Donoghue, Garnafailagh, Athlone, the same venue as last year. The show will take place on Sunday June 16th this year and a great day out for all the family is promised.

. Monksland Active Age group takes place each Thursday morning at 10.30am at Monksland Community Centre. New members are most welcome.

. A GROW Mental Health Peer-Support Meeting takes place each Friday from 11am – 1pm, in Monksland Community Centre. Meetings are free and no referral is needed. For further information contact John at 086 4411358.

. Roscommon Drug & Alcohol services have set up a SMART Recovery meeting; it takes place at Vita House Outreach Centre in Monksland on Wednesdays at 1pm. Smart Recovery is a leading evidence based addiction recovery programme focusing on managing behaviors. The service is completely free and the addiction may be to anything. The focus will not be on the addiction but on your behaviors towards it.

. The Athlone and Midlands Samaritans are at present looking for volunteers to assist in their work. No experience or specific qualifications are necessary. “We will train, mentor and support you all the way”, is the message the Samaritans are sending out to the public. . MABS the money advice and budgeting service is a free and confidential service for people who are experiencing money management and debt. MABS money advisers are on hand to provide advice and practical help regarding debt and working out solutions to money problems. Please phone 076-107 2400 in confidence.

. Kiltoom knitting Club continues on Mondays at 11am in The Parish Hall. All are welcome.

. St Kieran’s Community Centre Active Age Group meets each Wednesday morning from 10am to 12pm. New members are very welcome.

. Athlone Toastmasters is an educational organization that teaches public speaking and leadership skills. Meetings are held on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month at 8.15pm in The Creggan Court Hotel, Athlone. Contact : 086-062 3519 for further information.
